When Loretta Lynn sang, “If you’re lookin’ at me, you’re lookin’ at country,” she really hit a chord with Peterborough, ON’s The Kindness Killers. Fronted by Benj Rowland, taking turns between acoustic guitar and accordion, and featuring Julia Fenn on ukulele and vocals, Charity Justrabo on cello and Nick Ferrio on lap steel and back-up vocals, The Kindness Killers have quickly revealed themselves to be the bona fide flag-wavers of the genre and lifestyle that Loretta Lynn so proudly sang about.
With their innovative instrumentation applied to time-honoured song structures, the Kindness Killers’ sound is both familiar and daring. Rowland, Fenn and Ferrio all sing with enough twang to faithfully represent their influences, but in such a way that is neither contrived nor farcical. Though the band members were not raised in the Southern States, it is clear that their record collections were. This influence, in combination with the influence of Peterborough – a small Ontario blue-collar town – has resulted in a sound that, while unique to the Kindness Killers, can most certainly be labelled as country music.

Washboard Hank has been an obscure legend of Hillbilly Junk Jazz for more than 30 years. Back in the 70s he toured the streets of North America with his pal Reverend Ken and together they created a whole new genre of music ” punk bluegrass gospel.” They would heal appliances and pass the collection plate while developing a style that was totally unforgettable. The show expanded to become Reverend Ken and the Lost Followers a full tilt five piece party band.
By the late 80s Hank struck out on his own with his band the Honkers a less punk and more country combo that featured more of Hank’s original compositions like Polyester Poly Lit a Tire Fire in My Heart that were recorded on his Donkeys and Tire Fires C.D.
Since then there have been three more C.D.s Hoorah for Washboard Hank, Big Fun for Kids and the brand new disc Sweet Mysteries of Life. Presently Hank tours Western Canada with his pal Lance Loree and Plays around Ontario with The Gravestone Lickers.
